 FAQ

1. Does going to a good college really make a big difference in my success?

While you hear a lot of stories about the high school dropout who eventually became a millionaire, the fact is that the majority of the work force will need a degree to get to the top positions. You won’t feel the difference in the first few years of your career, when you’re all starting out, but some companies have a “glass ceiling” and only give management positions to those who at least have a an undergraduate degree. Those with college degrees also tend to be given a higher salary or are hired by larger companies with stricter employment requirements.

2. I have a bad academic record, can I still get into a good college?

You probably won’t be able to go into an Ivy League school, which has very strict entrance requirements (accepting only the top 10% of the student percentile) but that doesn’t mean you can’t get into a good school.

You will need to do well in your entrance exams and your college essays. Also, play up your strengths. Did you do well in sports? Were you a community volunteer? Do you have raw talent? Look for schools that have a more “well rounded” approach to student selection.

3. I’m in my 40’s. Is it still to late to go back to college?

No.There are many adults who decide to go back to college. There is nothing to be ashamed of, and your classmates will probably enjoy learning from you! After all you have the benefit of life experience!

4. What do I do if I can’t afford the tuition?

Try getting a scholarship or a student loan, or take a partial class load and work. Another option is to offer to work for the college and then get a discount. Some colleges also have easy payment terms which are spread out over the year. Don’t give up, ask them! They may even be able to refer you to financial institutions that can help you.
